Investing in…Our Community

At the Port, you might notice local baseball teams practicing in some of our warehouse facilities, the local chapter of Sea Scouts practicing maneuvers, or local volleyball teams holding tournaments. We believe in our community and show our support by donating the use of these facilities.

The Port continues to the support the Asparagus Festival.  Last year the Port operated a booth at the event where we had a fun environment-related activity for the kids and staff was on hand to talk with the people about the Port’s upcoming and ongoing environmental initiatives and answer questions relating to the Port, the community, and the environment.

The Port supports more than 50 regional groups by combining community events with Port marketing efforts.

We are committed to Stockton, the local workforce, and the organizations that work to improve this community.

Investing…Money

During the last five years, the Port of Stockton has invested nearly $4 million annually in environmental programs such as waterway debris removal, the sponsorship of educational centers, the preservation of refuge areas, and the establishment of permanent habitat.

Investing…Time

The Port continues to work with and be involved in many different community-based organizations. We understand the integral role that community support plays in our success and appreciate the hard work that is done by so many nonprofit agencies in the area to educate children, provide access to arts and culture, and assist those less fortunate in times of crisis.

Some of the organizations that have benefited from the involvement of the Port of Stockton and its employees are:

  • United Way
  • San Joaquin Partnership
  • San Joaquin County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Central Valley Asian American Chamber of Commerce

Investing…Effort

The Port continues to be committed to balancing business and commerce with environmental stewardship. Our Environmental Department ensures that our activities and practices are compliant with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

We endeavor to be a good neighbor to the community—a leader and example of environmental stewardship. This is reflected in our participation with the Delta Environmental Enhancement Program to enhance air and water quality and to protect wildlife habitats in the Delta and surrounding communities. The Delta Environmental Enhancement Programs brings greater focus to these important issues by building on past and present environmental successes and networking with other groups and agencies.

Most recently, the Port of Stockton was an official sponsor of Coastal Cleanup Day, partnering with the City of Stockton, San Joaquin County, and the California Coastal Commission in a day dedicated to cleaning up local waterways. It was a great success as Port employees and other volunteers removed thousands of pounds of debris and cleaned up a mile-long stretch of Burns Cutoff.

Where We Want to Go

The Port of Stockton wants to be seen as part of the solution, not part of the problem.

The Port Director and environmental manager propose to develop and implement an environmental initiatives program to make environmental protection a top priority at the Port of Stockton. We hope to establish the Port as an environmental leader in San Joaquin County and to set an example for conducting business in a responsible and sustainable manner.

Hazardous Waste

Follow all Federal, State, and local hazardous materials and waste disposal requirements.

Remember that oil, debris with oil, or solvent-saturated absorbent must be handled as hazardous waste. Make sure waste containers are in good condition and secured against wind, leakage or other elements.

The Port of Stockton seeks to assure environmental compliance and consistency with Federal, State, and Local environmental laws and regulations in a safe and efficient manner.

The Port of Stockton currently maintains a comprehensive environmental management program. The program includes guidance on water quality, air quality, hazardous waste/materials, underground and above ground storage tanks, environmental planning (NEPA/CEQA), dredging, and site remediation program requirements. The Port of Stockton's municipal storm water management program includes environmental education programs for Port tenants regarding storm water management practices and procedures. Through the environmental management program, the Port of Stockton continues to work with its tenants to share knowledge and expertise that will assist the entire Port community in understanding and complying with the various environmental programs.

The City of Stockton requires most businesses that discharge into their sewer system to obtain an Industrial Waste Discharge Permit that has business specific restrictions. But, there are also restrictions for all discharges to the sewer system.
